We Tried a Fragrance for Women

For some reason Michel Germain’s Sexual Noir (for women) came across our desk even though it makes a version for men. Still, we’re all about breaking down old notions of what is ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ in the area of personal care and we were game to try it out. Michel Germain describes this a floriental fragrance,  with “layfully succulent mandarin and sweet strawberries flow[ing] into a sophisticated palette of mysterious patchouli, pink orchid, and deceptively innocent pink sweet pea flower. Ever-present feminine aphrodisiacs enfold classic vetivert and inviting, warm notes of vanilla and amber.” We had an odd sense of deja vu when we put it on: we could’ve sworn we smelled this before. And indeed we had, anytime we passed by one of those caramel shops with a window facing the street, or when cotton candy was being spun for us at some fair. We had also smelled it when we tried Tumi’s Awaken which is even more awkward. We could see how this would certainly be flirty and fun, but it’s also what we imagine Emily of Emily in Paris smells like. This is definitely not as complicated or layered as it says it is - it smells like caramelized sugar, plain and simple. Walk into any Bath & Body Works and we’re sure you’ll find something similar for a small fraction of the price. This is a hard pass.
