We Shaved With 24K Gold

Shaving cream with 24K gold sounds like a relic of the aughts right before the 2008 recession. It stands in stark contrast to today’s world framed by concepts like wellness and vitamins, clean and natural, served up by brands with friendly names and minimalist packaging. So we were confused when Hunter 1114’s Gold Reserve Luxury Shaving Cream & Beard Wash came to us: this is a shaving cream that, as you guessed it, has 24K gold in it (as well as ginger root, sacha inchi, and vitamin E) and whose label takes style direction from the 2010’s when every guy was in dark denim and a plaid shirt. You’d be forgiven for thinking we bought this at a souvenir store somewhere in Frontierland. This shaving cream doesn’t lather but works more like a lotion and yes, it does have lots of gold in it. But this didn’t add anything beneficial to the shaving experience at all: it’s the adult version of sparkle or glow-in-the-dark toothpaste. In fact we we more upset that the smell was rather generic, like the hand soap in a gas station restroom. The gold gimmick would be great for complementary shaving cream at Cesar’s Palace, but every day? This is probably best left as a stocking stuffer.
