We Need to Talk About This New Hair Styling Product

We received this product as a gift from Vibe. Any products received as gifts are disclosed.

Like Goldilocks, we’ve tried gel, pomade, hairspray, leave-in conditioner (okay and mousse). And as we’ve come to find out, it totally depends on what type of hair you have, not just in terms of thickness or hair type (see Andre Walker’s Hair Typing System - side note, ALL hair is good hair!) but also in terms of whether it’s dry or oily. We also like to use different products depending on what we’re doing that day - fancy event? We’re going with gel for hold. Hanging out around the house? We’re using a leave-in conditioner.

Vibe has created a completely different category altogether, a hybrid of hair clay and hair spray which they are creatively calling Spray Clay. Founded by Timothy Morris who started Vibe Body Care in his garage, the Spray Clay doesn’t actually feel like hair clay but more like a watered down gel. This allows it to move through the nozzle smoothly without clogging it while also providing even coverage for your mane. We found it worked best on damp hair straight out of the shower. Rather than having to work it in our hands first, we applied it directly to our hair and styled it like we normally would. We appreciated that it didn’t feel like a you’re running a mashed up Elmer’s glue stick through your hair despite the word “clay” in its name; instead, its consistency allowed us to style our hair with ample time without the threat of hardening midway, and anything that got on our forehead or scalp didn’t dry quickly like spray glue but came off easily with a wash cloth.

Other pros include that it didn’t

weigh our hair down while managing to keep it in place and its

long-lasting scent which, if we had to nail it down, smelled like something that would be used on you at a Toni & Guy. There’s nothing worse than a scent that fades (pick a lane!).

The neon blue was also fun, reminding us of ads for Bed Head in the early aughts. It’s definitely on the pricier side for hair styling products, but the value add comes in the through the balanced spray, a nice hold that isn’t stiff, and no mess.
