Have You Tried This Jack Black Product?

If you’ve ever tried a Jack Black product, it was most likely their lip balm which was also most likely either your gateway product into Jack Black and/or your foray into upgraded grooming products (think Kiehl’s, Malin + Goetz, and Baxter of California). However instead of testing their body wash or shaving products which we have also gotten as gifts at one point, we wanted to try something of theirs which we had never heard anyone talk about: Jack Black’s deodorant, specifically their Pit CTRL Aluminum-Free Deodorant. Here’s the details: it’s natural, vegan, aluminum-free, cruelty-free, and gluten-free. It’s also notably absent of a lot of chemicals including sulfates SLS and SLES and parabens.

When we first got our hands on it, we couldn’t help but notice that the packaging was a little awkward – instead of the standard brick-shaped stick we’re used with deodorants (which fits easily in your hand makes for easy application), this is a roughly 4 inch tube. It’s also a screw cap so it takes some further mental adjustment, not to mention time during your routine (hey, a few seconds is a lot if you’re trying to optimize your morning).

What we’d put in the win column for it is how smoothly it glides on compared to other natural deodorants on the market like Schmidt’s, which tends to be granular and coarse. We also noticed that it didn’t transfer onto our clothes. The scent is Jack Black’s signature Turbo scent, a combination of rosemary, eucalyptus, and juniper berry; unfortunately it just reminded us of Vicks VapoRub (we expected something a bit more exotic for the price point). After application, it fades to a faint eucalyptus, so if you tend to depend on your deodorant to sub in for cologne, this is probably not going to do the trick. It’s also $19 for a 2.75 oz stick, compared to $4.99 for a 2.6 oz Old Spice deodorant in its plethora of spins on musk. All that being said, we’ll probably stick to Old Spice.
